Veeam Software has introduced a new integration that enables enterprise backup data to be utilised for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. This capability allows AI systems to securely access data stored in Veeam repositories through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard developed by Anthropic.
This integration marks an important step in leveraging data protection as a foundation for informed decision-making and AI development. By implementing MCP, Veeam facilitates easier integration between its data resilience platform and various AI applications, allowing stored data to generate insights.
“With MCP support, organisations can connect Veeam-protected data to the AI tools they use, whether they are internal copilots or large language models (LLMs). This ensures that data is accessible and secure.” explains Niraj Tolia, CTO at Veeam.
The MCP integration allows organisations to use their backup data in several AI applications, including:
- Discovering and retrieving documents using natural language queries.
- Summarising conversations from archived emails or support tickets.
- Automating compliance and e-discovery processes.
- Providing enterprise-specific context to AI agents.
These functionalities enhance the strategic value of stored data, shifting the perspective on how organisations can leverage their digital assets.
Veeam's AI roadmap includes five key focus areas:
- AI Iinfrastructure resilience: Ensuring that AI infrastructure, including data and models, remains secure.
- Data intelligence: Using Veeam-protected data for various AI applications, adding value to existing systems.
- Data security: Employing advanced AI and machine learning techniques to enhance security measures.
- Admin assist: Offering AI-driven support for backup administrators.
- Data resilience operations: Facilitating intelligent backups and sensitive data analysis based on risk indicators.
The MCP serves as a bridge connecting AI agents to organisational data systems. By supporting this protocol, Veeam aims to link protected data with a range of enterprise AI tools, from Anthropic’s Claude to custom-built LLMs.
The integration of MCP with Veeam’s offerings is expected to improve data accessibility, enhance decision-making, and simplify connectivity with compliant AI platforms. This development reflects a broader trend in utilising backup data for AI-driven applications, suggesting potential for transformative business insights.
