A recent survey conducted by Norton highlights a troubling rise in online threats experienced by Hong Kong residents, with scams emerging as the most significant danger. The Norton Hong Kong Cyber Safety Survey reveals that the prevalence of online threats has surged to 49% over the past year, up from 40% in 2023. Notably, 60% of victims reported negative impacts from these threats.
Among the threats identified, scams accounted for 34% of incidents, with 64% of victims suffering financial or time losses. Phishing attacks followed closely, affecting 19.6% of respondents. Concerns over privacy and the lack of regulations regarding AI technology were also highlighted, with 61% and 56% of respondents expressing apprehension, respectively.
The survey indicates that younger demographics are particularly vulnerable. Among respondents aged 20-29, 53% reported experiencing online threats, a significant increase from 39% the previous year. For those aged 40-49, the figure rose to 59%, up from 34%. Identity theft incidents have also surged, with 38% of young adults reporting such cases, while 41% of individuals aged 40-49 experienced similar threats. Alarmingly, 29% of victims reported being unable to restore their identities.
Despite promotional efforts to raise awareness about cybersecurity, the survey found that 24% of respondents felt ill-equipped to manage these threats. Reliance on friends and family for cybersecurity advice has decreased from 45% in 2023 to 34% this year, suggesting a growing need for professional guidance.
As scammers adapt their tactics, utilising advanced technology and psychological manipulation, the average monetary loss for victims has ranged between $1,000 and $10,000. In response to these rising threats, Norton launched the AI-powered scam detection tool, Norton Genie, in February 2024. This tool allows users to scan and evaluate potentially fraudulent messages and websites.
Mark Gorrie, vice president at Gen, stated, “Our commitment to our customers’ Cyber Safety cannot waver. With the launch of Norton Genie, we’re empowering users to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.” As Hong Kong continues to confront these challenges, enhancing cybersecurity measures remains imperative.
