Veeam has launched Data Cloud Vault Archive, a new archival-class cloud tier designed to help organisations cut the cost of long-term backup retention without weakening compliance, immutability or recoverability.
For CISOs and CIOs, the move is significant because it treats cold data as both a governance issue and a cyber resilience asset, rather than simply a storage problem.
Why archive matters
The company said the new service is built for older backups, large unstructured datasets and redundant, obsolete and trivial, or ROT, data that is still subject to retention rules but is rarely accessed.
Instead of keeping that data on premium storage designed for fast recovery, customers can tier it into Veeam Vault Archive automatically through policy-based workflows, reducing cost and capacity pressure.
Veeam also framed the launch as a response to changing threat and regulatory conditions. The company said backup repositories are targeted in 96% of ransomware attacks, while 58% of organisations rank data residency and sovereignty as the most important factor when choosing where data is stored.
Security and compliance
The archive tier is positioned as secure by default: immutable, encrypted and logically air-gapped, with customer-controlled key management and user-defined data placement.
Veeam said the service can also help organisations meet long-term compliance requirements, support recovery to alternate locations and preserve an immutable copy as part of the 3-2-1-1-0 backup rule.
This will resonate with security and infrastructure leaders looking to simplify retention architecture. Tape alternative
The clearest operational angle is Veeam’s challenge to tape. The company said tape remains a common low-cost retention option, but physical media introduces handling, transport, off-site logistics and slower recovery.

Rehan Jalil, president of products and technology at Veeam, said: “Data powers organizations, and trusted AI requires trusted data. That means data must be protected, isolated, recoverable and stored in the right location — even when it is no longer actively used.”
He added that long-term retention has become “a cyber resilience, compliance and cost challenge all at once”, and said Vault Archive gives customers a secure and cost-effective way to tier aging backups and cold data off premium storage.
Business relevance
For business leaders, the point is broader than storage economics. As data volumes rise and retention obligations lengthen, archive design is becoming part of resilience planning, audit readiness and AI trust. Veeam’s launch suggests the market is moving towards integrated backup lifecycles in which recent data, cold data and compliance data are managed differently but under one policy framework.
