A Keeper Security global study, titled Cybersecurity in Schools: Safeguarding Students in the Digital Era, reveals significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities in educational institutions, highlighting an urgent need for improved protective measures for students.
The findings reveal a troubling disconnect between parental confidence and the actual cybersecurity practices in schools. While 74% of parents believe their children's schools are safeguarding their sensitive information, only 14% of schools require security awareness training for students. Moreover, a mere 21% provide guidance on secure password management, leading to risky behaviours such as password reuse. Notably, 19% of respondents admitted to using the same passwords for both personal and school accounts, increasing the risk of data breaches and identity theft.
Key insights from the report underscore the lack of effective cybersecurity measures in schools. Only 9% of institutions offer access to password managers, leaving students vulnerable. Furthermore, only 14% mandate security training, with just 13% offering it as an optional resource. This lack of education leaves students ill-equipped to navigate the online threats they face.
Darren Guccione, CEO and co-founder of Keeper Security, emphasised the critical role schools play in both educating and protecting students. He stated that as digital tools become more integrated into education, there is a pressing need for schools to prioritise cybersecurity and provide resources that help students defend against evolving threats.
The report also outlines the serious consequences of cyber incidents in schools. Although only 7% of respondents reported their school had been hacked, the repercussions were significant, with 32% suffering data theft and 27% experiencing compromised accounts. Financial impacts were also noted, affecting both institutions and individuals.
Additionally, the study highlights the important role families play in ensuring their children's digital safety. Despite 51% of parents expressing concern over school cybersecurity, 19% still engage in risky practices like password reuse. Keeper Security advocates for families to adopt best practices, such as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and creating secure, unique passwords for each account.
The report calls for a collaborative approach between schools and families to enhance cybersecurity education, heighten awareness of online risks, and implement secure tools, ensuring a safer digital environment for students.
